I miss the days when thinking about the future doesn't scare me.

Sunday Five
1. List five things you'd like to accomplish by the end of the year (2004).
Graduate from medical school. Lose a lot of weight. See my kuya and my pamangkins (I miss them so badly!). Figure out the direction my life is going to take. Save money for my future (I am currently so broke it's not funny) and if possible, start earning for myself and not depend on my parents for everything.
2. List five people you've lost contact with that you'd like to hear from again.
Karolina, Sophia...Besides them, I have contact with the people I want to be in contact with. And of course, there's always friendster.
3. List five things you'd like to learn how to do.
Dance like a normal person. Cook palatable food.
4. List five things you'd do if you won the lottery (no limit).
See the world. Buy house. Buy a car. Live independently. Get a time deposit for my pamangkins.
5. List five things you do that help you relax.
Detox (windowshop) at the mall. Eat at my favorite restaurant. Surf. Talk to my friends. Read.

Scrubs
I don't know, but I didn't find it funny.
Maybe because when we, Pedia OPD JIs, did the marathon, the volume of Janice's laptop was so low and she did not bring speakers I could hardly make out the dialogues. It did not help too that outside the room there were screaming, squealing girls watching the practice of the school's basketball team.
Maybe because it was so darn hot in the room, and there was only one electric fan for all seven of us, so it was almost useless.
Maybe because in all those supposedly funny scenes when the characters did not know what to do or did something stupid because of inexperience, I could relate.
Maybe that was it. At this point in my life where my future seems so bleak and everything seems so vague, I could not afford to laugh at myself.

Menudo Disaster
I admit it. I can't cook.
The other day, I got an unusual text message from my kid brother asking me if I was home, and if there was dinner ready. Unusual, because I don't think he associates me with the word cooking - I remember there was a time years ago when he said he was hungry but snobbed the pasta with white sauce I prepared!
Anyway, my mother is in the US so it's been a while since he's had home-cooked meals. Kawawa naman my brother, so I asked my friend for help, and she suggested I cook her baon for the day, Arroz Ala Cubana. Sautee ground pork in onion and garlic, season with salt and pepper, add kinchay and diced carrots, fry saba and egg and arrange them on top of cooked rice. Finished.
Since it was a fairly easy recipe to follow, I had no problems cooking it, except that the meat was too oily. My brother loved it! Or I think he did. I didn't see him eat dinner, but judging by the amount of leftover, then I can definitely claim he loved it. Either that, or he was really hungry.
Since by this time I had the delusion that I was a good cook, and there was leftover uncooked meat, I thought, why not cook my brother's favorite ulam, menudo? Why even look for a recipe, it's just pork with potatoes in tomato sauce anyway? So I sauteed the other half kilo ground pork in oil, when the meat looked done, I added onion, garlic, sliced tomato, potatoes, and bell pepper. I frantically searched the cupboard for tomato sauce, but only tomato paste was available so I put the contents of the whole pack in. I seasoned it with salt and pepper, added water, and brought the whole thing into a boil. I put in bay and basil leaves. And then the moment I was waiting for: I got a spoonful of the ulam, brought it into my mouth, closed my eyes, anticipated the taste of my mom's delicious menudo, and ...
Shit, what the hell was that?
It tasted like, well, pork in tomato paste!
When I asked my groupmate Alvin - who knows how to cook a lot of dishes, and yeah, he's a guy - he couldn't stop laughing. Turned out I shouldn't use tomato paste as a substitute for tomato sauce because he said the former is used just to thicken sauces, and that it really would taste weird if I use it solely. And that I forgot (actually I really didn't know) to add what makes menudo menudo: LIVER.
So after OPD today, I mixed the whole can of Reno liver spread - I don't know how to cook fresh liver - with the dish and true enough, lasang Menudo nga. :) I can't wait to see if my brother will like it when he gets home from school later.

Sometime around March, 2003; after seeing that I didn't slice the salmon head into thirds and didn't remove the gills before dumping the head in sinigang broth...
Mom: anak, kung ayaw mong i-break ka ng boyfriend mo, tigilan mo na pagluluto.
Yeah. Mom knows best.

My very own quarter life crisis.
I thought I was immune, but hey, turns out I'm normal after all.

Honesty won't Get you Anywhere
The key to a successful post-graduate internship slot interview is to be able to dish out bullshit with a sweet smile plastered on the face.
Excuse me. Just the thought makes me want to throw up.

Other people my age pay their own bills, rent their own place, buy what they want with their own money.
Me, I depend on my parents for everything.
The price I (or my dad?) have to pay for wanting those two letters after my name.

Finally. Pedia OPD. For two weeks.
I'm required to be in the hospital for just ten hours every day. No duties. Sure, there'd be reporting, journal clubs, etc. and that hellish Pedia shifting written and oral exam at the end of the month, but hey, I can have a life again. For the next two weeks.
Yey!
